The Bathroom

Liam has decided that the bathroom is the appropriate place to ask me all of the hard questions.  The first round came when he started asking about babies and how they are born which led to how he was born.  This week came round two.  It was on a completely different subject but it was still a hard one.  One that he doesn't understand how hard it will actually be for Brent and I when it happens.

In the last week, daddy, Aunt Heather and Papa have all had birthdays.  (Brent is daddy; Heather is Brent's sister and Papa is Brent's dad.)  So, Liam and I were in the bathroom as he was taking care of business.  He, for some reason, likes to sit and talk which means I get to join him on occasion.  As we were talking, I reminded him that Aunt Heather was coming to visit from Colorado and that we were going to have a big birthday party in Terrell.  Liam started talking about his Papa's & Nina's dogs, Fred, Georgie and Jersey.  I had to remind him that Fred died and is in heaven.  That, of course, led to lots of questions.  The conversation went something like this.

"Mommy, why did Fred die?" Liam asked.

"Because he got old."  I replied.

"Why did he get old?"

"Well, Liam.  You know how you have a birthday every year and you get older?"

"Yes, mommy."

"Well, so do doggies.  And they don't live as long as we live."  I said while fighting back the tears.

Liam looks at me and says, "So, Lil Jo and Rosie are going to get old on their birthdays?"

"Yes."  I said or most likely choked out.

And, then just as quickly as the conversation began, it ended.  What Liam doesn't realize is that we were doggie parents for a very long time before we became parents of the two legged variety.  We had been married for about 6 months when we got Lil Jo.  She has been with us for almost 12 years now which is a good long life for a German Shepard.  Rosie came to us 8 1/2 years ago.  These two girls were our world for a long time since our Liam didn't come along until we had been married for almost 9 years.  These two have been through it all with us and have put up with a lot in the last 3 1/2 years since we have turned their lives upside down with their brothers!  Both have gotten older and we know that they won't be here forever but we are going to cherish each minute that they are here with us.

June 2009, Liam 1, Lil Jo 9 1/2, Rosie 6 & Jax was on the way.

We will have one more family picture to add at the end of October when we get one of all 6 of us!
