Firsts

As my little boys have grown up and gotten older, we have experienced many firsts....

-the blessed first cry/screams
-the first smile
-the first laugh
-the first tooth
-the first time he rolled over
-the first time he crawled
-the first steps
-the first words
-and many more.

What I was not prepared for was my 3 year old declaring that he has a girlfriend.  Another first and definitely not the last.

Last week, when I picked Liam up at school his teacher, Ms. Zelda, told me that Liam and Gabby had been talking about riding in Liam's red car during nap time.  Apparently, my little wooer was laying on his cot with his hands behind his head telling Gabby that he would come pick her up.  I kinda laughed and said, yes, Liam does have a red Mustang that his Papa bought for the boys.  I didn't even think about it again or even remember to mention this to Brent.

Last week though, Liam and I were laying in his bed after we said his prayers and he told me that he thinks Gabby is pretty.  (If I'm being honest, she's a really adorable 3 year old little girl with big brown eyes, a very expressive face and pretty brown hair.)  Then he told me that she is his girlfriend.  That's when the hair on the back of my neck went up a little bit.

I always thought that little boys were supposed to want to marry girls that look like their mommys.  And, little Gabby looks NOTHING like me.  And I was hoping that this girlfriend thing would never happen or at least wait a little longer!  Seriously, he's THREE!

A few days later, after I left Liam's room and it was just him and daddy at bedtime, Liam told Brent that Gabby's pretty, that she's his girlfriend, they are going to ride in his car and that he loves her.  Really?  It has become very apparent to me that I am not ready to share my little boys with anyone....even a three year old little girl!

So, let it be said that I am going to be one of "those" moms.  Forget the dad's in the driveway with a baseball bat.  (Yes, dad, you know I'm talking about you even if you won't admit it.)  This mama is going to have a baseball bat herself or a golf club or something.  And private school is sounding good too.  Maybe an all male military academy.  Okay, I won't take it that far.  Promise but the girls had better watch out!  This guy is going to be a heart breaker and his mom is going to be watching too.

Oh, yeah.  The one person who keeps telling me that I need to get over this also told me that I'm not allowed to date until I'm 38.  I'll be celebrating my 15 year anniversary that year.  Guess that didn't work out so well for him either.  I love you, Dad.  :o)
