Tadpole Update

We have froglets!  

Froglet:  a young frog; specifically one that has recently metamorphosed form a tadpole 

(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

We have frogs!

They loved sitting on the sticks, on top of the leaves and hiding under the leaves!

Ready to be released!

About 3 1/2 weeks after bring our tadpoles home, it was time to release the frogs.  We had to take them back to Rose Park because the creek was dry.  

It was an amazing 3 1/2 weeks of watching nature take its course.  We got to watch the tadpoles turn into froglets and the froglets turn into frogs.  We learned that tadpoles love boiled lettuce that has been broken into small pieces and frozen.  Two times a day the boys excited to go to the freezer to get the food out, drop it into the aquarium and watch them eat.  Once they became frogs and started living on the rocks and sticks that we used to make their habitat, we started picking okra leaves with aphids on them from the garden.  It was fascinating to sit and watch them snatch up the aphids with their lightening quick tongues.  

Releasing the frogs was bittersweet.  We had gotten attached to watching and feeding them. But they were not fairing well in the aquarium s o we knew it was time to turn them loose.  It was fun to watch them hop of of their jar and into the grassy are next to the pond that would become their home.  Liam was so excited to get to hold and touch them before they went out on their own.  We made some great frog memories!

We originally caught 16 tadpoles and released 9 adorable frogs!
